Chapter 1 In the Dark and at the Bottom Is this thing on I said into the machine Okay hello Check one two I think the red light means it’s on Okay my name is Jon Gummyshoes My mother is Joan Gummyshoes and my dog is Little Ricky I am talking into a Hammond Pro tape recorder My best pal Larry MacGuffin lent it to me MacGuffin and I solved one of the biggest cases of my career just last week We foiled a 8
plot involving the school’s most popular kid and a video game scam The popular kid Donny Holiday happened to be the twin brother of a dame that I once had feelings for Amber Holiday She hasn’t talked to me since I put her brother away I don’t blame her for it really I have a feeling that’s why I’m here I am accustomed to using my notebook But it is pitch black in here and I couldn’t write if my life depended on it The red light of the recorder is helping me see what’s around So I’ll describe the details of the strange case Hopefully talking through everything will help me figure out where I am After I was dumped in here I tore off the bandana that covered my eyes I looked around slowly with a little help from the recorder’s light I can’t see a ceiling so I’ll assume I am at the bottom of a very tall tower To my left is what appears to be a really thick pole with a guardrail around it that reaches up toward the ceiling 9
I can hear loud clanging noises like metal falling on metal It’s making me uneasy For some reason I can’t shake the thought of Amber at the moment I think she might have the answers to where I am and why I wish I could ask her but I don’t have my cell phone So here I am Jon Gummyshoes age ten and at the very bottom in the dark and at the bottom Sounds like how my cases usually go Only this time I can’t really see the way out Which is important for all detectives to know You have to always be able to see the way out Anyways I will start from the beginning 11
