said GHOST CROSSING He was already crawling out of the tent Jared stood and looked toward the pond Someone or some thing was swimming Jared could hear the steady movements Hurry up he said to Stan Woodland Cemetery was hilly and covered with forest Jared’s backyard went right to the edge of the graveyard He spent a lot of time out here He and Stan liked to camp in the summer They usually pitched a tent in this spot It was far from the road or any houses Most of the gravestones were on the other side of the hill There were four graveyards in the town of Marsh eld All of them were haunted Jared and Stan and some others had formed a group called the Zombie Hunters They often battled ghouls in the graveyards Stay quiet Jared said as they walked 8
down the hill They had to go slowly to avoid roots and rocks The moon was not up yet so there was not much light Just the beams from their À ashlights The pond was surrounded by woods Jared climbed onto a boulder that was half in the water and half out Whatever was swimming was near the other side of the pond Stan climbed onto the rock too Jared jumped when he heard someone singing The voice was coming from the water Something evil’s lurking in the dark it sang Jared held up his light and scanned the water The pond was about the size of a basketball court Who’s there shouted the voice from the water Jared shut off the light The voice called again What do you want He began to swim toward the boys 9
Jared put the light on again We were camping he called We heard you swimming As the swimmer got closer Jared could see that he was a few years older than the boys A teenager He swam very quickly and reached the boulder in a few seconds The swimmer stood in the shallows and shook the water from his dark hair He was small and lean but he looked strong He was wearing only a pair of gray shorts His eyebrows were dark and thick They met in the middle above his nose making one long brow Who are you the swimmer asked Jared shined the light on his own face Jared and Stan We live over that way Jared waved his hand up the hill The teenager nodded I’m Rudy Funny time to be swimming Stan said What’s up with that I always swim at night Rudy said 10
