Chapter 1 That’s No Muskrat Jared Jensen woke from a peaceful dream He heard a splash Something was swimming in the pond His friend Stan Summer was snoring in a sleeping bag Jared smacked Stan’s arm What Stan asked shooting up The inside of the tent was very dark Jared pushed aside a soda can and an empty potato chip bag He found his À ashlight and turned it on I heard a splash down in the pond Jared said 6
So what Stan said It was probably Just listen Jared said There it is a duck again Jared unzipped the tent À ap and looked out The night air was cool for August They were on top of a hill in Woodland Cemetery There was a small pond at the bottom of the hill It’s just a muskrat Stan said There was another splash a loud one That’s no muskrat Jared said It’s something big Let’s go take a look It’s one o’clock in the morning Stan said Right Jared said What could be better than being out in the middle of the night Let’s go Stan sighed He tugged his hiking boots on We’ll get bitten up by bugs he said Or attacked by a bear Jared had pulled on a blue sweatshirt that 7
said GHOST CROSSING He was already crawling out of the tent Jared stood and looked toward the pond Someone or some thing was swimming Jared could hear the steady movements Hurry up he said to Stan Woodland Cemetery was hilly and covered with forest Jared’s backyard went right to the edge of the graveyard He spent a lot of time out here He and Stan liked to camp in the summer They usually pitched a tent in this spot It was far from the road or any houses Most of the gravestones were on the other side of the hill There were four graveyards in the town of Marsh eld All of them were haunted Jared and Stan and some others had formed a group called the Zombie Hunters They often battled ghouls in the graveyards Stay quiet Jared said as they walked 8
down the hill They had to go slowly to avoid roots and rocks The moon was not up yet so there was not much light Just the beams from their À ashlights The pond was surrounded by woods Jared climbed onto a boulder that was half in the water and half out Whatever was swimming was near the other side of the pond Stan climbed onto the rock too Jared jumped when he heard someone singing The voice was coming from the water Something evil’s lurking in the dark it sang Jared held up his light and scanned the water The pond was about the size of a basketball court Who’s there shouted the voice from the water Jared shut off the light The voice called again What do you want He began to swim toward the boys 9
