8 BRIANA SULLIVAN AND CAMBYR SULLIVAN HIKERS One day Briana decided she wanted to go on a hike all by herself Her kids were at summer camp so it seemed like the perfect time She left technology behind and headed for the majestic White Mountains She spent two weeks in nature and loved it even when it rained She vowed one day she would hike the whole Appalachian Trail Her daughter Cambyr wasn't interested when her mom asked if she wanted to hike She didn't even like camping that much But then Cambyr found a video about a whole family that hiked the trail So cool she decided Let's do it After talking with Cambyr's teachers Briana prepared to homeschool her daughter Cambyr would finish up the eighth grade while walking 10 to 30 miles a day As they hiked up mountains explored forests and crossed rivers they scavenged for mushrooms berries and medicinal plants They made friends with hikers from all over the world And every night Briana played her guitar before they went to sleep The pair even picked up hiking names while out on the trail Briana's new name was Chickweed after the weed she foraged and stuffed into her sandwiches to help soothe the aches and pains from their trek Cambyr's was Kaleidoscope because her personality is all the colors of the rainbow The trail ended at Mount Katahdin in Maine more than 2,000 miles from where they'd started Briana stood on the trail sign and raised her guitar above her head in victory while Cambyr snapped a picture Exhausted and overjoyed they shouted Yahoo into the sky BRIANA BORN NOVEMBER 21 1972 CAMBYR BORN MAY 10 2006 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
