Welcome to Spooky Alcatraz In the heart of the San Francisco Bay more than a mile offshore sits a small rocky world-famous island With its rich history rugged cliffs and breathtaking views of the San Francisco skyline it’s no wonder people come from all over the world to visit But be warned Reader this is no island paradise On the contrary this island was once home to some of the world’s most dangerous criminals A federal prison surrounded by frigid shark-infested waters so perilous that no one has ever escaped and lived to tell the tale That we know of In fact this island is so spooky and so full of ghosts it’s considered one of the most haunted places in America Welcome to Alcatraz With all the ghostly things that have happened here it’s no wonder that Alcatraz otherwise known as The Rock is so popular with ghost hunters and paranormal researchers Not to mention tourists since every year more than a million people board ferries and flock to the island They come to see the historic buildings of the old federal prison that opened in 1934 They come to see art exhibits and installations They come for the incredible views of San Francisco one of California’s busiest cities But maybe most of all they come for the ghosts Lots and lots of ghosts Where did all these spooks come from And how did a barren rock in the middle of the San Francisco Bay become so world-famous The answer will take us on a tour through history all the way from melting glaciers and Indigenous legends to famous gangsters and crazy escape attempts Some people say the spooky stories about Alcatraz are just tall tales or legends to make the island feel more mysterious than it really is But what if the legends are true During the nearly thirty years the prison was in operation 1934 1963 more than 1,500 criminals spent time on Alcatraz What if the reports of moaning voices echoing clangs and heavy footsteps really are the ghosts of former prisoners What if the strange scents filling the hallways aren’t due to the damp ocean air and decaying cellblocks but rather a spooky presence still lingering on the island after all these years And it’s not just the ghosts of prisoners that linger at The Rock There have been sightings of evil beasts and deadly spirits haunting the island long before it was turned into a prison and even long before the Spanish arrived to colonize the area
