8 ING 21 CHICAGO SK WICK OFF CLOUDY SKIES The Chicago Sky seemed well on their way to winning their first ever game in the Women's National Basketball Association WNBA on May 20 2006. They led the Charlotte Sting by 16 points Just three minutes remained to play At that point though Charlotte stung the Sky with 18 unanswered points They surged ahead 82-80 Less than four seconds remained For 35 minutes we played great Chicago coach Dave Cowens said Then we stopped scoring I can't explain it we just couldn't score Chicago guard Jia Perkins who had played for Charlotte for two seasons before coming to Chicago put up a desperation three point attempt with one second left It missed badly But Charlotte made one of the worst mistakes in basketball They fouled a three point shooter with time almost expired Perkins sank all three free throws Chicago had its first win 83-82 For one game at least the Sky lived up to their nickname As team president Margaret Stender explained the name symbolized a beautiful day in Chicago
