Chapter Two Human World The car ride feels hot and long Mabel and Robbie are asleep Mabel’s arm has flopped to her side and her fingers are not gripping me anymore I manage to slide out At last I can breathe properly I gently shake and flap my wings They seem okay nothing is broken I glance around and make sure no one notices as I climb up to look out of the car window I gasp Human world is not like my world in the forest Human world is loud So many noisy cars hurtling around Where are their trees I don’t see any
The car stops and I hear Robbie sleepily ask for his mom I quickly climb down from the window and hide under the car’s back seat I hope no one finds me MOM Mabel screams I can’t find it I can’t find my doll Screaming is not going to make it appear Mabel When you calm down I will help you look for it says her mom Mabel is quiet Her mom sweeps her hand side-to-side under the car seat where I am hiding I do my best to press myself as far back as I can but it’s useless The mom grabs my foot pulls me out and swings me into Mabel’s sticky palm Is this what you were looking for she asks Mabel Thanks Mom You’re the best
We are out of the car now I move my eyes and try to see around me There are no trees here either Just a long line of human houses that all look the same I have seen drawings of human houses and cars in books at Rowan Tree School for Fairies etc I never thought I would see them for real I try not to think about my school I am so homesick I want to cry Instead I tell myself that I am going to make an escape plan and that I WILL get home Mabel runs into the closest house and up a flight of stairs She carries me into what I guess is her bedroom She throws me and her backpack onto the bed and runs out the door I gently shake and flap my wings again
