PROLOGUE Hammers are really useful tools You can use them to smack nails into wood remove nails pound out dents and about a hundred other things we’re not thinking of right now But there’s something else hammers rather a hammer can do propel the person wielding it through the sky at remarkable speeds Try that with a hammer you buy at the hardware store and you’re not going to get very far But if you happened to be an Asgardian named Thor and your hammer was an enchanted mallet called Mjolnir then you’d be sitting pretty Flying pretty You know what we mean
At that very moment Thor found himself soaring through Earth’s upper atmosphere In his right hand he held fast to the leather strap that in turn was wrapped around Mjolnir’s handle In actuality the hammer did the flying and Thor held on for the ride He had received a message from Nick Fury the director of SHIELD that something had gone wrong with one of their experimental aircrafts The other Avengers were currently occupied fighting against the Serpent Society somewhere in Antarctica This left Thor as the lone Avenger available to help Fury and the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division The Asgardian scanned the sky with the keenest of eyes He had spotted the SHIELD craft a minute before and was rapidly closing the gap between himself and the vehicle It moved fast Thor thought faster than Iron Man faster than an Avengers Quinjet Thor continued to close the distance Fury Thor said into a miniaturized Avengers communicator I have your ship in view It is fast but not too fast for the son of Odin
Static crackled over the communicator then Fury’s voice Don’t get too cocky Thor It’s a drone sure but we’re detecting that its weapons systems are fully armed and Thor suppressed a chuckle At ease Fury I’m certain that I can handle anything your craft can ZZZZRRRAAAAAAK Without warning the craft fired a beam of ionic energy at Thor The Asgardian reeled as his body surged with a paralyzing force Ahead the craft slowed abruptly and changed direction It was heading for Thor Momentarily caught off guard Thor struggled in midair Control over his muscles returned and the Asgardian flung his mallet forward propelling himself directly at the craft Have at thee he shouted Mjolnir propelled him toward the ship which fired pulses of ionic energy intended to take Thor down Thor swooped left and right up and down avoiding every blast At last he was upon the craft He caught the wing with his left hand and swung in behind the
