21 20 19 Alcatraz is filled with cells from its time as a military and later federal prison Before the US took control of Alcatraz Island in 1848 it was a wildlife habitat Thousands of nesting birds made their home on the rocky island But the peaceful spot soon had darker uses It first became a military fort then later a military prison By 1933 the US Army didn't need the prison anymore The federal government took over Alcatraz became a prison for the country's worst criminals 7
