DIY Science: Engineering — page 7 — WHEELIE FUN Astound your friends with your magnificent strength by carrying heavy objects around without breaking a sweat It'll be wheelie fun 10 STEP 1 Cut the piece of cardboard into a rectangle that is the same height and width as your shoebox STEP 3 Tape the two sticks of wood to the bottom of the box Make sure that the wood is positioned at an angle so that at one end the distance between the two pieces is just slightly wider than your empty thread spool You might need to use a lot of tape to make it secure STEP 2 Using clear tape place the piece of cardboard inside the middle of the box to make two equal sections YOU WILL NEED I shoebox 2 sticks of wood I inch wide and at least 20 inches long I empty thread spool I piece of cardboard something heavy pencil clear tape scissors I STEP 4 Grab your pencil and empty thread spool Push the pencil through the hole in the spool and then stick the ends of the pencil to the narrow ends of the wooden sticks using clear tape

DIY Science: Engineering — page 8 — 11 STEP 5 Put your heavy completely unbreakable item in the top section of the shoebox nearest to your hands Then lift the box using the handles Is it easy to lift Move the heavy thing to the front section Is it much easier to lift now C START HOW DOES IT WORK Did you notice it's easier to lift the object when it is in the part of the box that's farther from your hands That's because the handles of the wheelbarrow are actually long levers Levers turn a big easy movement at the top end your hands lifting the handles into a smaller but more powerful movement at the bottom end The thread spool is the turning point pivot and helps you move the load along When you pick up the handles of the wheelbarrow and raise it you are actually applying effort to the lever When you apply force by giving it a little push the wheel will start rolling allowing you to move your heavy load with ease FINISH

DIY Science: Engineering — page 9 — PAPER CUP TELEPHONES Do you wish you had your very own phone Well all you have to do is follow these steps Briiing briiing 12 STEP 1 Ask an adult to use the pushpin to make a small hole in the bottom of each cup YOU WILL NEED I piece of string 2 paper cups 2 paper clips I pushpin an adult STEP 2 Make sure that the bottoms of the cups are facing each other Poke the ends of the string through the holes STEP 3 Tie a paper clip to each end of the string

DIY Science: Engineering — page 10 — 13 HOW DOES IT WORK We hear sounds when our ears pick up vibrations in the air called sound waves The cool thing is those vibrations can travel through other things as well as air When you speak into your cup the sound waves are transferred down the string into the cup at the opposite end If you had three or four cups and joined the string from each one together you could have a conversation with more than one person Each person's string has to be tight though STEP 4 Pull the string tight so that the paper clips are pulled to the bottom of the cups Take turns speaking into one of the cups Hold the other cup to your ear to listen WHAT NEXT Why not try using different materials Can you still hear the other caller if you use a plastic water bottle What about if you use wool or yarn instead of string
