10 Mother Teresa the JANE ADDAMS SEPTEMBER 6 1860 MAY 21 1935 THE FIRST LADY OF PEACE HUMANITARIAN AUTHOR NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER You've probably heard of Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to helping the world's poor people But did you know that more than one hundred years ago an American born woman did the same Her name was Jane Addams and she almost always knew that she wanted to help people Jane Addams was a woman of action In Europe she learned of a program in which educated young men moved into a poor section of London and offered classes and activities to people right there in the neighborhood She thought it was such a great idea that she brought it home and founded Hull House in Chicago In a huge mansion surrounded by the crowded homes of poor people Jane Addams and her friends created a haven There they taught their neighbors job skills cared for their children started a kindergarten and formed a boys club which called itself the Young Heroes Club Food friendship financial help you could find them all at Hull House Jane Addams saw it all very simply neighbors helping neighbors In 1979 Mother Teresa an hororary US citizen won the Nobel Peace Prize She followed in the footsteps of the first American woman ever to be awarded that prize Jane Addams Jane Addams posed for this photograph in 1914. ANTHONY FEBRUARY 15 1820 MARCH 13 1906 CHAMPION FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS SUFFRAGETTE A WOMAN WHO ADVOCATES THE RIGHT TO VOTE FOR WOMEN VISIONARY AUTHOR Men and Boys Only No Females Allowed Can you imagine signs like that posted at your favorite store Your favorite fast food restaurant How would it make you feel Now imagine that sign on college applications on certain careers such as medicine and the law ON VOTING BOOTHS At one time American women didn't have to imagine any of this For them it was real They were not allowed to do a lot of things that men were allowed to do And sometimes they could even be arrested for trying Anthony broke the law So did fifteen other women Eventually they were all placed under arrest as were the three men who had allowed them to break the law The scandal made headlines in newspapers across the country What horrible crime had Susan B. Anthony committed She and fifteen of her friends had voted They just walked into a polling place and cast their ballots and in most places in the United States that was against the law In the trial that followed many months later judge made a mockery of justice Anthony was the only one of the sixteen women put on trial and the judge found her guilty and fined her 100 she never paid it Susan B. Anthony came from a Quaker heritage that believed in the equality of men and women but most Americans at the time especially men did not agree The three men who let her vote were also found guilty and spent five days in jail All this because a woman voted What did the whole incident prove Sadly it showed how women were treated like second class citizens Susan B. Anthony couldn't vote or receive a fair trial Many of the men in our country wanted to keep all the power and not share it with women Unfortunately she didn't live to see her dream fulfilled but many of her fellow suffragettes did In August 1920 the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified and women became first class citizens Finally women were among we the people allowed to take an active part in our democracy The amendmen t guaranteed women the right to vote but Black women were still barred from voting in many parts of the country until the 1965 Voting Rights Act
