It was nearly midnight but Jared felt wide awake Since there was no school this week he could sleep in His friends had planned a morning basketball game at the outdoor court Jared shivered We might as well play ice hockey he thought A rustling sound behind him made him stop and look back Probably a deer he thought He listened for a second then started walking again He reached the path between the cemeteries The trees had no leaves this early in the season but 8
the thick branches blocked most of the moonlight Jared took out his flashlight and lit the way He heard steps behind him and turned Deer don’t follow you he thought Could it be a bear Or a coyote He swept the light across the path but saw nothing unusual Then he was sure he heard a giggle Who’s there he said firmly He wondered if Amy and Stan were following him as a joke But they both knew he was hard to fool Whoever you are show your face he said 9
