Rovers are space exploration robots used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA and other space agencies to explore the surfaces of planets moons and asteroids Since rovers don't need food water or oxygen they're perfect for exploring They can travel around uninhabitable places to collect information A number of rovers have been on Mars including Curiosity who joined Oppy on Mars for her own exploration Through their missions humans have learned a lot about the surface of Mars
Opportunity loved her job She was one of the two lucky rovers exploring planet Mars to help humans understand it better Oppy has solar panels which harvest the sun's energy and charge her batteries She is equipped with cameras and other instruments that transmit pictures and information about her surroundings and wheels capable of navigating rough terrain like the rocky and sandy surface of Mars
She had worked there since 2004 and had driven more than twenty eight miles
Her time on Mars wasn't all work She went sledding down hills in countless craters and even welcomed some surprise visitors Rovers aren't the only spacecraft sent to explore Mars There are also stationary robots called landers which transmit information from their landing spots and orbiters which pass by the planet to take photos or collect information
