Under Our Feet: Rocks — page 2 — IT’S AMAZING ALL AROUND YOU The world around you is a pretty interesting place too wherever you are There are mountains and valleys natural wonders and human made skylines wherever you look Living in the spaces between are the people plants and animals that make up life on Earth They are all around you all different and all fascinating There’s so much to see LOOK DOWN Have you ever thought about what’s there when you look down though Ever wondered how mountains get so tall Have you seen a rock that came from outer space Do you know which tiny rock is more valuable than your house Even looking boring rocks sand and clifftops have an amazing story to tell so let’s grab a shovel and dig deep 5

Under Our Feet: Rocks — page 4 — MINERALS FACT FILE ROCKS Minerals are natural solid chemicals that form as crystals Rocks are hard natural materials Rocks are made up of one or more minerals Rocks and minerals are both usually solid Rocks and minerals are not alive and have never been alive COMMON ROCKS SANDSTONE GRANITE FLINT PUMICE ROCK STARS People who study rocks minerals and the Earth are called geologists They study our planet’s history through the rocks it is made of and study landslides earthquakes and volcanoes They can study metals and ores or look at natural materials of the Earth such as coal and oil Some try to understand the changes that the land weather and climate have been through by studying the rocks left behind CHALK MARBLE COAL 7
