Women in Film — page 3 — A 100 Million Movie DuVernay directed A Wrinkle in Time 2018 a film based on Madeleine L’Engle’s fantasy novel The project made her the first black woman to direct a live-action movie with a 100 million budget She was only the third woman to do so The star-filled cast includes Reese Witherspoon Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling Storm Reid plays the lead character Meg Murry Meg an ordinary high school student must rescue her father from prison on another planet DuVernay was excited about the opportunity to create a film with a minority heroine DuVernay was the first black woman to direct a Best Motion Picture nominee DuVernay didn’t expect to hear her name called and it wasn’t But she was still a winner Her film was successful in other ways DuVernay did not go to film school Her first job in the movie business was promoting other films What she learned helped her make her own movies She spent 50,000 of her own money to create her first film I Will Follow
