The Jungle Book — page 2 — ABOUT THE AUTHOR RUDYARD KIPLING Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay now Mumbai India on December 30 1865. His parents were English and he was sent to school in England at age six He was not happy to be away at school but he enjoyed writing He published his first book Schoolboy Lyrics when he was sixteen In 1882 Kipling went to live with his parents in Pakistan He became well known for his writings about the lives of soldiers In 1889 he returned to England after traveling through Burma China Japan and the United States After marrying an American Kipling moved to Vermont While there he wrote The Jungle Book 1894 and The Second Jungle Book 1895 two of his most famous books Kipling enjoyed traveling but he eventually settled in England He wrote many books including Captains Courageous 1897 Kim 1901 and Just So Stories 1902 In 1907 he became the first Englishman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature Kipling died in 1936 and is buried in Poet's Corner of Westminster Abbey
