Our Setting The Tempest is set on a mystical island near Italy possibly in the Mediterranean Sea The characters are from Italian cities of Milan and Naples Both ancient cities were founded in 600 BC They grew to be of great importance in Italy The mystical island has many different features including fresh springs brine pits barren place and fertile It also has fens flats bogs and at least one area with no shelter The people on the island can find berries nuts crab apples and mussels to survive on It has been noticed that the characters in the play often see the island in different ways This was part of the theme of illusion Shakespeare was creating This makes the island one of the major characters of The Tempest W 2 HILODZIN WUX
