True Tales of Survival You never know when you'll need outdoor survival skills Sometimes you'll be prepared other times you won't Double Trouble Todd Orr was an experienced outdoorsman In the fall of 2016 he was hiking in Montana when he spotted a grizzly bear and her cubs He had been calling out to avoid startling any bears But this one didn't heed his warnings The mother bear saw him and immediately charged He used his bear pepper spray which usually works But the grizzly ignored it and jumped on him biting his head and arms After deciding that he wasn't a threat the bear stopped her attack She and her cubs went into the woods But as Todd was heading back to his car the bear came back and attacked him again She bit his arm and shoulder and even stood on him The yelling didn't work The bear spray didn't work However Todd knew to stay low curl up tight and cover his neck and vital organs He even managed to stay calm sort of That combination finally worked and he survived to tell the tale
Out of the Plane and into the Jungle Juliane Koepcke was a teenager on Christmas Eve in 1971 when the plane she was traveling in was hit by lightning The plane crashed She was the only survivor It was a miracle that she survived But to make matters worse she had landed in the Amazon Rainforest Juliane had a broken collarbone and plenty of bruises She was bitten by bugs and the bites became infected She only had some candy to eat Juliane drank water from a flowing stream to keep from becoming dehydrated She then followed the water downstream until she found civilization She managed to survive for 11 days before finding help Amazingly her experience in the Amazon didn't scare her away from nature She later became an animal research scientist Little Boy Big Adventure In September of 2016 three year old Tserin Dopchut was outside playing when he disappeared into Russia's Siberian woods His family was terrified because of the dangers of wolves bears and the cold temperature The people of his village looked for Tserin but he could not be found Three days later he heard his uncle calling his name and was reunited with his family How did he survive He had eaten some chocolate he had in his pocket and had slept under a tree to stay dry The first thing he asked for wasn't food water or a warm coat It was his toy car
