Colonial America — page 2 — Primary Sources in U.S. History IntroductIon Primary sources are the best way to get close to people from the past They include the things people wrote in diaries letters or books the paintings drawings maps or cartoons they created and even the buildings they constructed the clothes they wore or the possessions they owned Such sources often reveal a lot about how people saw themselves and how they thought about their world This book collects a range of primary sources from the colonial period from Christopher Columbus’s arrival in Hispaniola in 1492 to the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in 1765 Over nearly 300 years European powers led by Spain France and England established settlements and political power in the Americas Spain dominated South and Central America and what is now the U.S. Southwest the French were concentrated in what is now Canada The English took over much of the East Coast establishing the Thirteen Colonies As the numbers of settlers grew including large numbers of slaves and indentured servants so cities began to emege Meanwhile the impact on the native inhabitants of America increased as settlers encroached on their territory Over generations some Americans came to believe they had little connection with their rulers in Britain 4
