Winter Willpower — page 2 — If Only It Had Been Just an Earthquake In January 2017 a series of earthquakes shook a mountain range in Gran Sasso Italy Heavy snowfall combined with the tremors created an avalanche A cascade of 120 000 tons 109 000 t of snow rocks and trees slammed into the Hotel Rigopiano The avalanche demolished the entire resort burying 40 guests Ten hours later rescuers finally arrived and began to dig for survivors The people who were alive didn't give up hope They conserved air in the little pockets they were buried in They spent their time sleeping and talking to each other for comfort Eleven people were rescued including four children Some of the survivors called the rescuers angels and it's hard to disagree The Scout Motto Is Right Be Prepared On December 26 2008 Paul Sharpentier Dan Steenblik Matt Clevenger and Tom Diegel were enjoying a wonderful day of skiing in Utah Suddenly Matt and Dan were swept away by an avalanche Paul and Tom didn't panic The friends had all the right equipment shovels signal beacons and probes They soon found Dan then quickly followed a beeping signal beacon to Matt Their probes told them he was six feet 2 m below the surface Oxygen like time was running out They shoveled as quickly as they could and finally found Matt's head They got him breathing and soon had him out Today their story is an educational video that teaches avalanche safety and awareness
