True Tales of Survival You never know when you'll need outdoor survival skills Sometimes you will other times you won't So always be prepared The One Percent In March 2013 Alex White was skiing with his friend Joe Suddenly a 1 200 foot 300 m wide avalanche came down upon them Alex struggled to put on his emergency air pack as he was swept away by the snow The tumult tore muscles in his knee and cut open his calf He thought he was going to die and thought about his girlfriend and his college education However he ended up on his back in a small pocket of air with the breathing tube by his face He waited for help to arrive Rescuers found Alex when a signal beacon indicated someone was still out there Experts say that after about half an hour surviving being buried in an avalanche goes down to 4 percent After three hours less than 1 percent Joe didn't make it But Alex miraculously was in that 1 percent After being buried for six hours his body was broken and nearly frozen But he survived Amazingly after thinking he would die a week after the avalanche Alex was with his girlfriend back at college
