SIZE New England is approximately 72,000 square miles 186,500 sq km in area Rhode Island is the smallest state in New England It is also the smallest state in the United States It covers 1,545 square miles 4,002 sq km The largest state in New England is Maine It covers 35,385 square miles 91,646 sq km Vermont has the smallest population in New England Approximately 600,000 people live in Vermont Almost 7 million people live in Massachusetts Boston Massachusetts FALL COLORS New England is known for its fall leaves The colors depend on the soil the weather and the altitude The types of trees also play a role Pine trees do not change color at all Red maple leaves turn red Leaves from dogwood trees turn purple and gold Every year thousands of people visit New England to see the fall leaves In late September the leaves are most vibrant in Maine Vermont and New Hampshire By mid-October the colors can be seen in Connecticut Massachusetts and Rhode Island
