The quiet between the two was deafening Hey Carter said I’m kidding I’m just trying to have some fun with you Oh Josh said Okay Yeah that’s pretty funny Why do you need money so bad Carter asked You saving up for some video games or something No Josh replied A car actually No kidding Carter responded and then made a frowny face but nodded his approval All right you’re a lot more ambitious than I was when at your age I wanted to buy one of those drones Saved up all summer long that first year Josh watched as Carter stared up at the ceiling where there were some frog wind chimes on display as if looking back into the past to a simpler time four years ago Did you end up getting one I did Carter said scratching the side of his head Thing was huge What did you do with it Josh asked Well I don’t know I wanted to fly it around I guess Carter replied like it was a dumb question I never got a chance to use it though Why not Josh asked HAUNTED STATES OF AMERICA
Carter sighed and spun his phone around on the counter like the spinner for a board game Day I got it Carter said Put the thing together in the picnic shelters out back Plugged the batteries into the remote control and was ready to go Josh waited for him to keep going I ignored the instruction booklet of course Carter said Because when you’re excited for something that’s what you do I don’t Josh thought deciding to keep that bit of information to himself He knew Carter already thought he was some sort of a boy scout or something Took the thing up into the sky Carter said His hands and fingers were formed as if they were clutching a large remote control You ever fly a drone No Josh admitted Not yet Well they’re ridiculous Carter continued I had it up in the sky and it sort of hovered there for a few seconds I pushed the throttle stick forward and the stupid thing took off Like forty miles an hour it flew off like a shot On no Josh said He thought he knew where the story was going but decided to ask anyway So what happened SWAMP OF LOST SOULS
I’ll tell you what happened Carter said sounding almost like he was mad at Josh for what he was about to tell him I pulled the stick back or what I thought was throttle to get the thing to come back toward me You hit the pitch instead Josh said Yep Carter said I sure did I pushed down on the wrong stick Instead of coming back toward me it went down I drove it right into the swamp with a glug and it was gone Josh laughed and only a second after he did it did he realize that probably wasn’t the best idea Oh wow Josh said covering his mouth I’m sorry Yeah well Carter said I guess I can laugh about it now You never went looking for it Nah Carter said What’d be the point Even if I found it that drone was never going to fly again Let the gators have the stupid thing Josh nodded Though he knew it didn’t really matter he couldn’t help but feel bad for the drone lost and sunk somewhere in Manchac Swamp The thing never really had a chance with Carter at the controls Well when I get my car I’ll be sure to keep it away from the swamp Josh joked I don’t want to lose it like your drone HAUNTED STATES OF AMERICA
Carter looked up from his phone and gave Josh a blank stare It looked like he didn’t think Josh was very funny at all Sorry Josh said I mean Carter started laughing Oh man You’re too easy You should’ve seen your face It was like you thought I was going to jump over this counter and punch you right in the snot locker Snot locker You know your nose Carter said pretending to pick his Your snot locker Oh right Josh replied He was learning all kinds of new things tonight You’re an okay kid Josh Carter said If we can get you to not take things too seriously I think we’re going to get along just fine Yeah okay Josh replied It looked like Carter was about to say something else when the radio next to the cash register crackled Home base come in over the walkie-talkie squawked It sounded like Tom the Bayou Boat Tour owner and senior captain of the fleet Carter snatched up the radio and pressed the TALK button SWAMP OF LOST SOULS
