Nadia waved to LJ and headed to the jungle gym LJ walked toward us I felt like I’d swallowed a whole bottle of hot sauce and my body had turned into that bottle I couldn’t breathe but I was also breathing too fast I pulled on the strings of my hoodie and the second LJ walked into the circle I yelled Why were you with Nadia of all people LJ rolled her eyes She crossed her arms and straightened her back At first she didn’t answer but then Mary Ann asked
Were you trying to figure out what’s going on LJ nodded There are all these rumors going around and I wanted to know if any of them were true But why do you even care I asked Why don’t you care LJ stood directly in front of me She looked down at me which was kind of easy for her because she is SO tall Last week we were all about trying to beat Nadia at her own game to help the kids on this playground Maybe I’m still trying to do that
I didn’t buy it If that was what LJ was trying to do why wouldn’t she have talked to me about it first We’d taken on Nadia together last time Plus yesterday LJ thought Nadia had changed Why would she be beating Nadia if she thought Nadia was actually a nice person now I may have been mad at LJ but I needed her to see what was going on But don’t you realize that she’s not going to let you win She always has a dirty trick up her sleeve It’s obvious this is just another mean scheme
LJ huffed She doesn’t always have a dirty trick up her sleeve She was mad at YOU if you remember and wanted to get back at you That’s why she was nasty about the basketball tournament That hurt It hurt because it was true Nadia had been trying to get back at me because I’d accidentally busted her cousin’s nose with a basketball But she was also mad about all her Bonus Bucks being stolen And even though Nadia didn’t know it LJ and I had stolen them together
