Chapter 2 GROWING UP CANADIAN P K Subban stands out in the NHL for many reasons but perhaps the most obvious is his skin color Subban is black and he grew up in a country where a large majority of the population is white Both of Subban’s parents are originally from the Caribbean His father Karl was born in Jamaica while his mother Maria was born on the island of Montserrat In 1970 when Karl was 12 years old he moved to Canada with his parents Maria and her family moved to Canada that same year but to a different city Karl used hockey as a way to settle into his new home of Sudbury Ontario He was one of the few black kids in the neighborhood In an effort to fit in Karl played hockey and watched Hockey Night in Canada on TV every Saturday night He also became a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens one of the Original Six teams in the NHL
