THE MIRANDA FAMILY Miranda was born on January 16 1980 in New York City His mother Luz is a psychologist and his father Luis is a political consultant His older sister is also named Luz Miranda grew up in Inwood a largely Hispanic neighborhood in northern Manhattan Throughout his childhood Miranda’s parents instilled a love of music in their children Even though the family couldn’t afford to go to Broadway shows often they listened to their favorite musicals soundtracks His father particularly liked The Unsinkable Molly Brown Miranda also listened to hip-hop on his bus ride to school He attended Hunter College Elementary School a school for gifted children where he sang in the choir He also took piano lessons 6
