Learners for Life Not only children go to school Many adults sign up for classes in community colleges and universities Grownups often want to develop work skills such as how to use new technology The need to learn does not end Opening the Doors 1600s New England colonies set up schools for boys Parents pay tuition to send sons 1700s Some towns open schools for girls 1790 In Pennsylvania new laws create free schooling for poor children 1800s Massachusetts opens free schools and requires that all children attend 1821 Boston Latin School the first U S public school for older students opens in Boston 5
