CHAPTER 1 A SUPER HOLIDAY You won’t find it on an official calendar but make no mistake the world stops for Super Sunday Since the first Super Bowl was held in January 1967 Super Sunday has become more than just a game Famous singers step forward to belt out the national anthem The hottest entertainers line up to perform during the halftime show Companies scramble to come up with inventive commercials that will have people talking long after the final whistle At the heart of it though is the game itself Featuring the two best teams in the National Football League NFL the Super Bowl is the pinnacle of the sport And when it’s done the winners get to crown themselves champions grab the Vince Lombardi Trophy and revel in a sea of confetti
What’s not to like The rise of Super Sunday is like the history of the NFL itself In the beginning it wasn’t that big a deal The first Super Bowl wasn’t even a sellout Heck it wasn’t even called the Super Bowl Back then it was the AFL-NFL World Championship Game Boring right Fans seemed to think so Even though the most expensive tickets went for 12 there were plenty of empty seats at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as the Green Bay Packers crushed the Kansas City Chiefs 35 10 Though his team lost Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt came up with an idea to make the game sound cooler the next time He noticed his kids kept playing with a toy called a Super Ball
