CHAPTER 1 TIME FOR CHANGE In 1865 the US government passed the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution ending slavery in the United States Racial discrimination however did not end In 1869 a court case provided a legal basis for segregation Plessy v Ferguson stated that black and white train passengers had to ride in separate cars The law allowed businesses to separate people based on race Its slogan was separate but equal Citizens in Atlanta Georgia march in protest of segregation in (cid:10)(cid:9)(cid:8)(cid:7) 5
