Paws of Courage — page 6 — FOREWORD The bond between a military or law enforcement working dog and its handler is unlike any other and goes far beyond what one may imagine I am fortunate to have experienced that bond firsthand in the 1960s while serving in the U S Marine Corps as a scout dog handler After training with my canine partner a German shepherd named Stormy we were deployed to Vietnam in the midst of war When Stormy and I arrived on the battlefield and the action was right in front of us I like many other young recruits had doubts about my training I asked myself Is it really going to work Am I going to make it out of here alive On our first mission our patrol had just finished clearing one village and we were proceeding to enter the next one Our group was walking through a gap in the trees when suddenly Stormy stopped looking up to the right flank It was her warn ing signal My doubts about my training were still fresh in my mind but in that
