The Story of Penn’s Woods Long ago in the year 1682 a ship named Welcome sailed up the Delaware River Onboard was an English Quaker named William Penn Many Quaker families had sailed with him They were happy to see the green wooded land that would be their new home 6
One year before in 1681 King Charles II had granted William Penn 45,000 square miles east of the Delaware River to repay a debt he owed Admiral Sir Penn William’s father He made William Penn the governor of this new colony to rule as he wished William Penn wanted to name his new colony Sylvania which means woods But the king thought it should be named to honor Admiral Sir Penn So William agreed and his new colony became known as Pennsylvania which means Penn’s Woods The king also wanted to rid England of the Quakers which he called troublemakers troublemakers Not only could he get rid of his debt but he could send the Quakers to this vast forest in North America where they 7
