Our Nation’s Keystone Pennsylvania is nicknamed the Keystone State A keystone is the last stone placed by the stonemason at the top of an arch It holds the two sides of the archway together keeping it strong and stable Along the Atlantic Coast the 13 original colonies form an arch too If you turn a map of the colonies sideways you can see that Pennsylvania is in the center of that arch just like the keystone of a stone archway archway Our young nation was born in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania held the northern and southern colonies together as they fought for independence becoming the United States 2
