JACK TWYMAN In 1806 a Spanish expedition headed by Gabriel Moraga discovered a smooth-flowing river in central California An expedition member wrote The air was like champagne and the Spaniards drank deep of it drank in the beauty around them Es como el sagrado sacramento It’s like the Holy Sacrament Moraga dubbed the river and surrounding valley Sacramento Several decades later the discovery of gold on the nearby American River ignited a feverish influx of people who hoped for instant wealth John Sutter Jr son of one of the men who had made the initial discovery established a trading colony on the Sacramento River to serve the miners calling it Sacramento Soon it became the first incorporated city in California and within a few years was named the state capital Today Sacramento is the sixth-largest city in California and the metropolitan area has a population of more than 2 5 million 9
