I n the small town of Puako Hawaii light rain begins to fall as the sun dips below the horizon A fox gecko emerges from its daytime hiding place among the rocks of a flower garden and climbs up the side of a house It sits on the ledge of an open window licking moisture off its nose and bulging eyes A kowhai moth flutters past the gecko’s head drawing its attention The gecko follows the moth into the house
and races up the wall navigating around a clock and several pictures The moth bounces erratically around a light fixture on the ceiling The gecko scurries across the ceiling its eyes transfixed on the moth’s movements until it comes to a sudden stop The moment the moth settles to rest the gecko leaps on the hapless creature swallowing it whole Then the gecko continues on its nightly patrol of the kitchen
