About cars Cars as we know them today were invented in 1885 At first cars were incredibly expensive because they were handmade When American car manufacturer Henry Ford left invented the assembly line in 1913 his factory workers were able to produce cars much more quickly and car prices tumbled Today there are more than a billion cars on the roads worldwide Car styles Over time the shape and color of cars have changed These changes reflect the materials and technologies available to produce them and the fashion of the day 50s 90s 60s 2000s Purpose built Cars are now designed to fit the needs and lifestyles of many different groups of people Sports utility vehicles SUVs people carriers hatchbacks and supercars are just some of the different kinds of cars available 40s 70s 80s 4
