How the Computer Changed History — page 9 — THE SPEED OF INNOVATION Moore's Law is often mentioned in relation to computer innovation It is not actually a law Gordon E Moore is a cofounder of Intel Corporation In the 1970s he wrote a paper about his ideas on the speed of computer innovation He believed processing speeds or overall processing power of computers would double every two years This has proved true However some people in the technology industry question whether it will be true in the future They believe the speed of innovation will increase and happen even faster There is no doubt then that computers have transformed our lives And the speed and rate of this transformation can seem truly astounding Since the development of the integrated circuit components have been continuously improved This has led to faster data processing and larger capacity for storing information on smaller and smaller computers with a lower cost As one writer expressed in 1996 Today's computers are literally millions of times better than the first computers on almost all measures of this kind Presumably those millions in 1996 could be multiplied many times to describe the capacity of computers today
