How It All Began In 1978 Milly Zantow was working as a volunteer for the International Crane Foundation a bird conservation group near her home in the Baraboo Hills of southern Wisconsin She went on a trip to Tokyo to represent the foundation at a meeting with the Japanese emperor Cranes are very important symbols in Japanese culture representing happiness and luck While she was in Japan Milly noticed that when she came out onto the street each morning people had placed little bundles at the curb Every day it was something different One day it was glass another day paper another day metal Soon Milly understood that the Japanese were separating their waste and putting it out for recycling Japan
