6 B r e w e r s BREWING UP he first European settlers in the area that now includes the city of Milwaukee Wisconsin were French and French Canadian fur traders in the 1830s By the late 1840s German immigrants had joined them in the growing city on the shores of Lake Michigan Soon so many Germans had moved to Milwaukee that their language was heard on the city’s streets more often than English Their customs including brewing hearty beers and serving spicy sausages became common as well That heritage was honored in 1970 when local businessman Allan H Bud Selig bought a floundering one-year-old American League AL team called the Seattle Pilots brought it to Milwaukee and renamed it the Brewers Selig had been trying to bring baseball back to his hometown ever since the Milwaukee Braves had moved to Atlanta Georgia five years earlier So even though his purchase of the Pilots became final just six days before the start of the 1970 season he was determined to put the team on the field for opening day T
