The Green Bay Packers are older than the National Football League NFL E L Curly Lambeau founded the team in 1919 That was one year before the NFL’s first season Green Bay joined the league in 1921 Lambeau was the Packers first coach He also played tailback for the team from 1921 to 1929 In his last year as a player-coach Lambeau led the Packers to their first championship As a coach he led them to titles in 1930 1931 1936 1939 and 1944 as well The Packers struggled after Lambeau left in 1949 But a new dynasty began when Vince Lombardi took over as coach in 1959 The team featured hall of fame players such as quarterback Bart Starr He guided them to NFL titles in 1961 1962 and 1965 They also won the first two Super Bowls The games were held after the 1966 and 1967 seasons Green Bay became known as Titletown USA After Lombardi’s death in 1970 the NFL renamed the Super Bowl trophy the Vince Lombardi Trophy GREEN BAY PACKERS CAPTURE MOST NFL TITLES Curly Lambeau in 1919 1 4
