O 0 0 0 0 See o e e o DD RESCUE SQUAD Saving Lives RESCUE SQUAD ost of us take rescue teams for granted When people get in trouble they pick up a phone and help is on its way But would you run into a burning building to save somebody Or jump out of a helicopter to pull someone from the waves It takes a very brave person to do these jobs day in day out During a disaster most people panic and run Rescuers are trained to be calm They get on with the job despite the risk to their own lives and they also need to be able to think fast When a rescue team arrives on the scene seconds count if someone's life is at stake Being in a rescue team is also about working together as a group When you're risking your own life you need to have complete trust in the people around you BRAINS AND BRAN Some rescuers are professionals like the army teams that rescue pilots from behind enemy lines Others are volunteers like the lifeboat crews who rush to their boats when duty calls But all rescue teams need to be highly skilled It takes a lot of experience to control a helicopter in stormy weather or to find miners trapped hundreds of feet underground Rescuers are usually very fit and strong They need to be if they re swimming in mountainous seas or carrying someone over their shoulder in a house that s on

DD RESCUE SQUAD Saving Lives TERROR AT THE TWIN TOWERS In September 11 2001 terrorists flew a hijacked airliner into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City Jay Jonas and five other firefighters from his team rushed to the scene GET OUT FAST Just as the firefighters started climbing the stairs to rescue people trapped high above another plane hit the South Tower As they reached the 28th floor the building shook Captain Jonas had no choice he ordered his men to get out On the way down they found a woman who was too exhausted to walk down the stairs The unit stopped to help her even though it slowed down their own escape A Firefighters carry an injured colleague from the wreckage of the Twin Towers on 9 11 A fire truck stands amid the grey dust that blanketed Manhattan after the towers
Terro he Twin A MIRACULOUS ESCAPE Suddenly there was a giant roar Jonas and his men later discovered that the whole tower had collapsed around them But the firefighters were remarkably lucky They were in the one part of the building that didn't crumble They lay trapped in the rubble for four hours Then the smoke and dust cleared enough to allow them to see a way out Finally they were free Captain Jonas and his crew were among only 20 people who made it out of the tower alive That day 343 other firefighters died saving lives in the Twin Towers RESCUE SKILLS CY Some 350 dog teams searched through the rubble of the Twin Towers to find people who had been buried But it is risky work Dogs and their handlers can suffer cuts burns and other serious injuries in the process There is also the danger from inhaling the toxic ash
