INTRODUCTIONS n the winter of 19II 12 two explor ers were locked in a race to be the first to reach the South Pole Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen beat British explorer Robert Falcon Scott by more than a month On the way back Scott and his men were trapped in a blizzard and died only 11 miles 18 N kilometers away from a spot where they had left piles of supplies that would have saved their lives In his last journal entry Scott penned We shall stick it out to the end but we are getting weaker of course and the end cannot be far It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more Ironically only 16 years later Amundsen lost his life in a plane crash in the Arctic These explorers faced frostbite cruel whipping winds dan ger and even death to learn about these forbidding regions But with this vol ume you can learn all about the polar biomes without the trouble of putting on snowshoes or even a warm jacket The first biome you will learn about is the North Pole a biome is a major ecological community
