Jack London's short adventure novel The Call of the Wild was published in 1903. It is centered around Buck, a dog. Buck is taken from his home on a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California, and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. In the harsh environment, where he is forced to compete to survive and dominate other dogs, he grows increasingly feral. By the end, he has shed the facade of civilization and is relying on primal instinct and gained experience to emerge as a wild leader.
